5onFri(10)--my sister the fashionista

yesterday i wore tights with open toe flats for the first time in my life. it was liberating. the fact this took place can only mean one thing... SHE is in town.

erin the sister is a fashion icon. she comes into my closet and makes things happen.
she rescued me from 1997... in 2005. true story.

i was in grave danger of becoming one of those fashion backwards lasses who hit their high school high note and then promptly stop singing. i was stuck. and then she walked in my closet and got all up in my personal issues and kicked my booty and 3/4 of my closet to the goodwill bin. it hurt.
but it was needed and i've never looked back.

every so often i need a refresher course. she teaches me to have fun with my clothes.. that it is better to adore a few pieces that you want to wear all the time then have a closet full that make you feel like a frowny frumpinista. so i love when she wants to get back in there and get her hands dirty. this visit i had a few challenges for her.. things i wanted to delve into that i wasn't quite sure how to... silk scarves? vintage hats? clothes i had given up on? yes please. she is a magic worker. no lies.

on thursday i mentioned that she should do my 5 on friday for me because i had no idea what i was going to do.. thus this idea was born. this very embarrasing/mortifying idea... that included me being swept up in erin's imagination station inside my closet and letting her photograph me "modeling" such creations.

top 5 outfits erin came up with from things i already owned:

1. the dress that needed to be jazzed up...
who has time for ironing? clearly not us.

what were the children doing while the auntie and i were playing dress up?
running in their underwear underfoot. :)

2. the shorts that were feeling awkward and sloppy. plus i have always  wanted to wear a silk scarf not my head. check.

3. 50's housewife with a vintage hat. could i wear this to church? seriously--- what would you think if you saw someone wearing a net on their head at church?
awesome, kind of awesome or freak...? mmmm.... cause i kind of want to. :)

4. the 1996 revival. okay so is it reeeeally scary that i have had this silly old navy dress since 1996? kind of. truth: it was in the goodwill pile.. i had absolute no hope for this one... truth: i am still a little unsure.. i just have a hard time getting past the little flowers . i used to wear A LOT of little flowers.. big flowers.. 1996 had too many flowers in general i feel like. but erin totally freaked about it. and i had to admit it was kind of fun.. so we subjected my neighbors to some ridiculous fashion show.
this is me saying really? little flowers? you're sure? ok.

and this is me scaring my neighbors and fully embracing 1996.

5. the gap skirt that has been waiting for it's second chance... i have had this skirt since i was a freshman in high school. um yeah that would be in 1994. i know that sounds like a really long time ago. even to me. i just knew that with her classic lines she would make it back out of the abyss someday.. i just had no idea how to do it. erin is amazing. i have seriously told her she should do this for a living.. but you know she's really busy saving lives in africa so... she says she doesn't have time. ;)

soooooo... there you have it. :)
the good news is i don't have to buy new clothes.
the bad news is i had to drop her off at the airport last night.

i love that girl. she is pretty much the only one who could convince me to do this and post it here. but that's what sisters are for.  totally humiliating you and you loving them for it. :) i love you sissy. come back soon. :)
