synchronized swimming: where art meets humiliation

it is not every day you are coerced into a synchronized swimming contest.
it is also not every day you sing the pledge of allegiance to someones shorts.
out at camp the moms went up against a group of boys from texas.
they thought they were going to be rocking that contest un-opposed.
i made an off handed sarcastic comment about our untapped talent laying waste poolside and lesli (the pregnant one) took it and ran.

we performed under high stakes packed poolside conditions.
the texas boys brought their best moves. it included a lot of irish jig songs, and some mr. universes poses.
it ended up being a tie. which was anti climactic.
jeff the overseer of all things strange and random at camp and husband to lesli (the pregnant one)...made his final ruling...

in order to break the tie the teams must have a synchronized swim off.
each team captain would represent their team solo.
there was heated debate in the mom camp over who exactly our team captain was.
i insisted this was lesli's idea.
she just kept saying i was better at this type of stuff... which for some reason did not actually feel like a compliment.
in the end we petitioned jeff to let us perform together and since he goes home with lesli he wisely agreed.
i was nearly drowned by a belly bump.

the judges were one of our good friends and two of our husbands.
the texas boys cried foul.
i think they were just terrified of our impressive leg synchronization and pregnant lady shoulder lift.
 the tension was thick..
lesli and i gripped each other for support as the judges delivered their verdict.
 victory.
 the conciliatory handshake.
cracks me up. i am a terrible winner.
here i am giving my typical condescending oh you tried so hard.. good job.. maybe next year schpeel.
drives nate ca-razy. :)
synchronized swimming...
where boys become men. pregnant bellies are buoyant. and victory tastes like chlorine.
take that texas.
