in which i initiate the ugly cry.

oh friends.
i have this big giant thing to tell you.
and yet i'm scared because it feels as if the moment i let it pass through my lips the reality of it will crystallize and the slippery slope of action will open before me.
i stand on the brink of that slope.
i curl here on my couch, in the house i have made a home, in the town that grew me up, and it's all about to change.

we are moving.
not down the street. not across town. not anywhere near.
but very very far.
maryland.

my fingers struggle to type that.
for i have been surprised.
i have been surprised by love for a place that felt like a prison on so many days.
nebraska.

i can't talk about it yet without crying.
i love my house.
i love my friends.
i love my church.
i love my town.
i love this little life i lead here.

there were moments i didn't think i could say yes. i'm still scared.
scared is code for complete and total emotional basket case.
i know this is what we are supposed to do and yet. and yet. and yet.
and yet all my babies learned to walk on these wood floors. this house cradled us as we became a family.
and yet i can walk to the library, a little main street parade and the neighborhood park all in the same morning. i can still hear my alma mater's canon boom during football games while i sit on my front porch swing.. this town has grown me up.
and yet my friends are 'just stop by' friends. oh how i longed and prayed for them. and now they live in my heart and in my neighborhood.
and yet my church is a place i love to go. full of people who i love to see. and  there is so much promise and potential and genuine goodness it smells like spring over there.

oh.. the 'and yet' is killing me.

i will get there. i will get happy. my heart will match my head.
right now i am grieving the goodbye.
and diving head first into the ugly cry.
i love you people.
yes you.
you nebraska people.
you should know... i claim you. and i love you. and some time while i wasn't looking i think i became one of you.
i'm from nebraska. kind of. ;)

so how about some sweetness to soften the blow?
yes?

nella found her toes. and now they live in her mouth.

also. these are her three main faces:

interested...

interested and mildly amused..

and generally happy.

and luci likes to sing on the potty.

and has crazy good dog energy.
seriously.. like a little dog whisperer.

these are the random facts for your sunday afternoon. :)
since i can't yet bring myself to talk about the big stuff.

i will speak of the things i know.

sleeping babies...about to become big kids.

surprise naps in delicious light, wrapped in nubby blankets.

the last moments of littleness.

eyelashes that reach to the moon and back.

it's going to be okay. i know this.
mommas have been asked to do harder things since the dawn of time.
i will uncurl my clenched fingers and unfurl my comfortable heart.
i know who holds my story.
and He writes the one i want to live.

  1. I had to look up a map so I could figure out exactly where Nebraska and Maryland are and, by our standards, that's halfway across the globe. Then again, anywhere feels like it's halfway across the globe when you live here. I've never moved away from the islands, but have been dreaming of doing so since childhood and now that there are the kids, I want to still but am too scared of losing everything that's familiar, just like you so beautifully put it. All I can tell you is that your faith will be sure to guide you through this hard time but it's also such an exciting time, right? I look forward to following your journey here, knowing you'll be just fine (and how lucky Maryland is to be acquiring your amazing family). If all else fails, think about how much closer to the sea you'll be (that's always a good thing!). x

  2. ahhhhh okay. i know why we became friends. i mean, besides the obvious similarities. you told me to make this place i'm in, home. and i have. so wasn't easy, but it's happening. not even 5 months in (oh how it felt like forever) and we have arrived. i love the people, the town, and GOD has and is doing big things here and in my heart. and you know He'll do that, IS doing that in you as well. so i guess it's our turn to encourage you. maryland is lucky to have you. and isn't it one of the top 10 places to live in america?? i believe it is, my friend. making disciples of all nations means wherever God sends you, that's what you're doing. while i know you've got big love for the people where you are and them you, there are people that need your family elsewhere. you've been strengthened for such a time as this. and i for one, am SUPER jealous of all those marlanders that will soon be sharing life with your sweet family. xo

  3. You will be sooooooo missed! As a kid we moved every three years or so with my dad in the military and it continued for me until we came here, to Nebraska. I get how hard it is to leave everything you know behind. And, I understand the grip this land of farming and wide open spaces gains on a person's heart (even when you're not originally from here). You are loved.

On the up side, I look forward to being able to visit! Maybe a couple's getaway with a group of people renting a beach house for the weekend?

  5. Oh my mommy heart hurts for you and your words hit so close to home...but I do love an adventure! Personally, I think Michigan would have been a better choice, but He never consults me on these things. ;)

  6. Oh girl. Oh. Girl. I'm so proud of you. You're doing the brave. You're going scared. You can do it. You can! You will! I'm cheering you on.

  7. i've retyped this comment like 12 times now. i don't have the right words. they don't sound profound or lovely or wise or mature. they sound more like a sad whining cry because i'm not getting what i want. sometimes life doesn't "feel" fair. i know that. in my heart, i know that. we love you...

  8. He does write a great story! This Nebraska chapter has held some of the best moments and taken some unexpected turns. And as much as I don't want to see this chapter end, I have to be honest, that I am really looking forward to reading the Maryland chapter!! We will miss you something terrible, we love you, and Maryland is blessed to be getting you!

  13. well hell. i'm sorry. you will dominate your new place with joy. and moving is good for the soul...cleaning out everything that doesn't belong in the home and the heart can be invigorating, however painful.
    love to you.

  14. oh sweetie. He holds it all. i know you know this, but i'm praying for you to feel it too. way down in your bones, and snug around your chest, and everywhere.

love to you today. go wrap yourself in that nubby blanket and sit in the light and be held.

  15. sweet one! praying heaven down upon you.
three years ago we moved to north dakota...from maryland.
it was painful, and hard, and the most beautiful and best for our fam.
turns out, we belong here. silly, how i doubt HIM.
    sending you a hug!

and if we ever visit md...all our fam is there...i will say hey!

  16. Oh love. Hard. So. So. Hard. Okay...not being helpful...a great and mighty adventure awaits...you already know this...it's the here and the NOW that hurts. I think there is so much power in letting yourself grieve a situation, a feeling, a moment in time. So...may you have many helpful hands for packing...may you have a delightful, stress free road trip to Maryland (is that physically possible???), may you find that missing thing-a-ma-jig you have been looking for when you pull the frig out to load it on the truck! May you fill the love a thousand hugs as life gets tough. Love to your clan.

  17. so full of sweetness.

and there are great acoustics in the bathroom, which makes singing on the potty totally reasonable at any age. :-)
