i like my baby and want to be with it alot-- so there.

one of the great joys/tribulations of pregnancy has nothing to do with this growing belly of mine-- but has everything to do with this big mouth of mine.... i find it WAY too easy to just say whatever crosses my stream of conscience- be it mean, ugly or indifferent. where is my filter?? that being said, sometimes it is a very freeing feeling-- because you know what? sometimes these things need to be said-- and i am just not scared enough not to say them. ( a double negative-- is that allowed? i don't remember..)

so... the topic of the day--- i have a friend who is in the position of needing to take her daughter to day care so her family can keep their health insurance. it is really hard for her! she would so much rather stay home and is trying to figure out something that could make that happen... but in the meantime she has to take her sweet baby to daycare. :( so she posts this as her facebook status-- and the responses- sheesh! i seriously wanted to pop some of these women in the face! everything from --and i quote 'suck it up- you need to share her!' to 'we all went through it and it's good for you and the baby!'

WHAT??? now i understand there are certain moments in time when these things are unavoidable...certain situations where these things are quite literally unable to be avoided. my disgust i don't think (for today) has anything to do with wether or not you choose to use daycare... i honestly couldn't believe the response of these other women! so my question is more towards....
why are mothers not celebrated for their unique, deep connection to their babies?
why is it considered a sign of weakness?
why would woman after woman say 'you'll get used to it.' ?
doesn't that mean a little part of you has died?

now we are not talking about the drive home after dropping your grown up baby at college! we are talking about real babies! babies that are supposed to be snuggled in your arms, receiving their love and nourishment from you!! all of the research points to that strong emotional and physical connection to their mothers as the rock they stand on for years to come... so why do we pretend??

my friend is hurting-- she is supposed to hurt-- she is a wonderful, connected mother, in a desperate position. where is this world going if that bond of motherhood is not only questioned but scoffed at???

like i said... big, pregnant mouth on the loose... but some things maybe should be said.

  1. I just read this. I LOVE IT!! After long conversations with each of the people that commented on my post we came to the conclusion that they still think it is "good for her" and "good for me" but they will keep their mouths shut. I guess that's better than nothing!

  2. Just found your blog (after seeing the cupcakes on The Lettered Cottage) and I know this is an old post but I feel the need to comment. . .and agree. LOUDLY.

I have two small children and work two days/week, and it still kills me to drop them off, and I rush to pick them up after work. I do not always understand our generation who urge us to seperate from our children, vacation without our children, just enjoy life (without our children).

I am working on (or meaning to work on) being less judgmental of others, but clearly, I need to work harder :)
