there is just something about the smell of animals, funnel cakes and sweat that blend to perfection into the aroma of the summer fair.... or something.
i love the fair because it is a time capsule. it is just how i remember it. there are only a few of those experiences still around.. left untouched by the digital revolution. it makes me happy that i can bring my children to a place where a toothless man buckles them in to a rickety car that sends them flying over tracks that probably haven't seen this side of a safety manual since 1976.... it's the little things you know..?
ari skipped the piggy train to ride the REAL roller coaster this year///
first we watched. we sized it up....
yeah we are all OVER this... so tickets were purchased, mommy was wrangled and we were on our way...
can i just take this moment and ask...
does age always steal your queasiness controls or is it just me?? i remember going to the fair, spinning and swinging and flying and dropping and now...
even watching those rides makes me feel like i'm about 10 weeks pregnant and forgot my saltines at home. blech. the one that spins and the floor drops out?? 15 years ago-- awesome!! now-- all i can think about is wondering if i brave this ride and lose my lunch will it hit me in the face.. otherwise known as, not awesome.
next up-- pony rides. we pretty much go by the rule of any overpriced, 3 minute trip around a circle we snatch up that experience PRONTO.
poor lucienne experienced much of the fair like this...
i do not like to be haggled with. i really do not like to be pressured to play games to win prizes that i wouldn't buy let alone try to win. at least it is better now that i go with my family...
going with friends when i was in high school was traumatic.
quick lesson for all the carnies that read this blog and i KNOW there are a lot of you: catcalls, whistles, taunts, and offers of relationship do not make me want to spend $2 for a ball to knock down whatever. i don't care if there is a prize every time.
p.s a giant stuffed dog or a poster of a tiger is not really a prize-- more like another trip to goodwill... thanks anyway.
part of the fair that we never had growing up in the 'burbs is the agricultural stuff-- we know about the animals.. but now you nebraska people will laugh but i know my other friends will understand... did you know you can bring just about anything in and they will judge it and slap a ribbon on it and you get bragging rights for an entire year because you canned, say green beans? ( although i think these are really cute because look at that grandma handwriting.. makes me miss my grandma. why do all grandma's write the same??)
next year man.. i am so going to enter a flower. i have absolutely no idea what these things are judged on but i would just really like to say something like,
"oh excuse me, i must go check on my fair entry." and i think it has been like 20 years since i won a ribbon for something and that sounds like fun too.
the highlight is always the animals.. the farm kids laugh at us big time. especially when i said "can i take a picture of your cow?"
and maybe when i kept calling their sheep goats.
i KNOW what a goat is.. they just look so goaty with all their wool off.
see! i even called it wool! not fur or hair.. i'm serious --i know what a sheep is.
even the pigs clearly humored me. but if i WERE going to hang out with farm animals i would totally wear her boots while doing it. for there is no reason to not be funky fresh while wading through poo. none at all.
and remember that potty training issue that grayson was having a few weeks ago? solved. take this idea to the bank. pure money.
so while we are on the subject of things you didn't really want to see...
i am not a big fan of poultry. they are so unpredictable... and they have those beady little eyes. at the fair all the small animals are housed in separate little buildings. chickens, ducks, rabbits... now rabbits-- there is an animal i can get behind. i have a dream of having backyard chickens and gathering the eggs in the morning for omelets... but then i see these guys and i really question the dream.
but maybe chickens are like children---
it is always different when they are your own.
and always a favorite the fearless florez's... we love these guys.
and the ball of death can not be beat.
what is the ball of death you are wondering?? i am glad you asked... my favorite is the grandpa...
" you can do better than that! do you want to see more??? "
this little guy was only 3 but wanted to be just like his grandpa-- said his grandpa. so they let him ride his bike inside the ball of death for a little bit. it was actually pretty sweet-- except for the part where they said that no insurance company would cover them so they were selling pictures in the ball of death to save up in case of an accident... i guess what can you expect when you are fearless.
